How to Translate a Marriage Certificate to Arabic for MOFA Attestation
Here is how the translation step actually works, who is allowed to do it, and where it fits in the wider attestation chain for a UAE-bound marriage certificate.
Why Your Marriage Certificate Needs an Arabic Translation
UAE government departments, courts, and MOFA itself generally work in Arabic, with English accepted for some processes — MOFA’s attestation process, for example, accepts a document in Arabic or English for its courier-based route, or one accompanied by a legally certified translation. A marriage certificate issued in another language, whether that is Tagalog, Hindi, French, or anything else, needs to be translated before it can move through this chain.
This comes up most often for family visa sponsorship, updating a family book or civil status record, banking and inheritance matters, or a court case involving the marriage. In several of these situations — particularly anything routed through the Ministry of Justice or the family courts — an Arabic translation is expected even when English would otherwise be accepted elsewhere in the process.
Choosing an MOJ-Licensed Legal Translator, Not Just Any Translator
A marriage certificate is a civil status document, so its translation needs to come from a translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice under Federal Decree-Law No. 22 of 2022 — the same requirement that applies to birth certificates, powers of attorney, and court documents. A general translation agency, an online tool, or a translator without UAE registration will not produce a document MOFA or the MOJ will accept, no matter how accurate the wording is, because what is being checked is the translator’s license and stamp, not just the text. For more on how “certified” and “legal” translation differ — and why the distinction matters for a document like this — see our guide on what MOFA actually accepts.
Preparing Your Marriage Certificate Before Translation
Before translation, make sure you are working with the original marriage certificate rather than a photocopy or scan — MOFA does not accept laminated documents, and originals matter at every stage of this process. If the certificate was issued outside the UAE, it typically needs to be legalized in its country of origin first (through that country’s own foreign ministry or an apostille, depending on the country) and, where relevant, by the UAE embassy there, before translation and UAE-side MOFA attestation come into play.
Getting this sequence right matters: translating a document before it has the prerequisite attestations, or attesting before translating, is one of the more common ways this process gets delayed. Our post on getting the translation and attestation order right walks through the correct sequence in more detail.
What Happens After Translation: The MOFA (and Possibly MOJ) Steps
Once your marriage certificate has an MOJ-licensed Arabic translation attached, both the original and the translation move on to MOFA attestation — either through the digital attestation route, for eligible UAE-issued documents with the right embedded reference, or through the standard courier-based route. If the certificate is also going into a Ministry of Justice process, such as a family court case or a civil status update, it may need to be registered or reviewed there as well.
If the fully attested certificate is then heading to another country, a further round of destination-embassy legalization is often required on top of MOFA attestation. Exact fees and processing times depend on the document, the route, and current government processing volumes, so it is best to confirm current timelines directly with MOFA or with Dunes rather than plan around a fixed number of days.

How to Get Started
Do I need to translate my marriage certificate if it is already in English?
Not always. MOFA’s courier-based attestation route generally accepts documents in Arabic or English. However, if your certificate is going on to the Ministry of Justice, a family court, or another Arabic-language process, an Arabic translation is often still expected. It is worth confirming with the receiving authority, or with Dunes, before assuming English alone is enough.
Can I translate my own marriage certificate, or ask a bilingual friend to do it?
No. For MOFA attestation and any official UAE process, the translation needs to come from a translator licensed by the Ministry of Justice under Federal Decree-Law No. 22 of 2022. A translation without the correct license and stamp will not be accepted, regardless of how accurate it is.
Does my marriage certificate need to be attested in my home country before I translate it in the UAE?
In most cases, yes, if the certificate was issued abroad. It typically needs to go through your home country’s own attestation or apostille process, and often UAE embassy legalization there, before UAE-side translation and MOFA attestation. See our guide on getting the order right for the full sequence.
How long does marriage certificate translation take before MOFA attestation?
Turnaround depends on the certificate’s complexity, the current workload of the translator, and how urgently you need it. Rather than plan around a fixed number of days, it is best to contact Dunes directly for a current estimate specific to your document.
